A closer look at pretty Fiscardo

There’s an abundance of traditional fishing villages to explore in beautiful Kefalonia, but Fiscardo or Fiskardo stands out as one of the prettiest.

Situated around 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of the capital Argostoli, the village sits around a lovely little harbour, where working fishing boats bob happily beside private yachts in the clear blue waters. With glorious views of the neighbouring island of Ithaca, Fiscardo is a wonderful place to sit back and relax with a chilled glass of local wine, while you take in the gentle bustle of fishing village life.

The village was lucky enough to escape unscathed from the earthquake of 1953, so almost all of the traditional houses and buildings, retain the Venetian architecture. A true gem of a village, Fiscardo boasts a cosmopolitan atmosphere but with a distinctly traditional and warm undertone. The pretty natural bay is the perfect backdrop for the pastel-coloured houses, where cheerful taverns, restaurants and shops offer everything from hand-crafted local keepsakes to delicious traditional cuisine.

Backed by thick cypress and built around a sheltered bay, it is popular with sailing crews who moor up their yachts, patronage of the rich and the famous who drop by on the megayachts, here in the summer. Most of the houses around the harbour now host upmarket seafood eateries, cafés and holiday homes.

The rich cultural heritage of Kefalonia is kept vibrantly alive by the local people, and Fiscardo is the perfect blend of the old and the new. This stunning hillside fishing village is just waiting to be explored. With its hidden coves and picture-perfect beaches, calm and crystal clear waters, there is so much to discover.
