What is Mount Ainos?
Mount Ainos, sometimes also called mount Aenos, is the national park on the Greek island of Kefalonia. It’s popular for its stunning views of the entire island and offers plenty of opportunities for exploration with its caves. At 1,628 meters high, it’s the highest mountain range in the Ionian Islands. It’s also a great spot for hikers to take in the incredible view from the top. It is the home to a special forest of fir trees that are so dark green they appear to be black. The Venetians named it Mount Nero which means Black Mountain.

Mount Ainos is the natural habitat of foxes, birds, ferrets and wild horses. You will also see one of the rarest types of fir trees in Europe, which only grows in Kefalonia, Abies Cephalonica. The trunks of these fir trees are so dark and dense that Ainos was given the name Black Mountain (Monte Nero) by the Venetians.

Hiking, Biking, & Bird-Watching in Ainos National Park
1. Hiking in Ainos National Park
Hiking is a great way to explore the natural beauty of Mount Ainos. There are many hiking paths on Mt Ainos, but those on “Mt Ainos” offer some extra special scenery thanks to its protected national park status in Natura 2000 Protected Area.
If you’re looking for an invigorating hike, Mt Ainos is the perfect place to go. The trails are well-marked and there’s a good variety of routes to choose from, so no matter what your level of experience or fitness is you’ll be able to find a hike that’s right for you. Hiking on Mt Ainos will be great no matter whether you reach the top or not – and if you do make it to the summit, you’ll be rewarded with some truly spectacular views. There are five marked trails on Mt Ainos, and they vary in difficulty from easy to strenuous. You’ll need a good pair of hiking boots and basic hiking essentials for the hike up to the summit, but other than that you can get by with just some sunscreen (and maybe a guide).
Main Hiking Areas
When visiting Ainos National Park, there are a few different trails to choose from. The longest trail is Kissos-Petasi-Nyfi-Megas Soros at around 8.6 km (5.3 mi). This route will take you through the most wondrous parts of the park: caves in Petasi and Nyfi, with beautiful views from Megas Soros. If you’re looking for an easy and more peaceful walk, check out the Environmental Center of Ainos – Chionistra Trail. This 6.2km (3.9 mi) trail takes you through a beech forest with some great views along the way!
If you’re looking for something a little more challenging, try the Epano Eza-Melissi trail. This 2.6-kilometre moderately difficult route has fir trees and views of the Southern Ionian Sea–definitely worth checking out!
Various sporting and alternative activities take place on Mount Ainos including mountain biking, star gazing, and jeep safaris.
What will I see on Mount Ainos?
When you visit Mount Ainos, you’ll be able to see a variety of different things. For example, the church and gardens are definitely worth seeing, as is the view from the top of the mountain. Additionally, if you’re interested in Greek Orthodoxy then this will be an educational opportunity for you. Finally, don’t forget to take pictures! The views from Mount Ainos are absolutely stunning and definitely worth capturing on film.
2. Watch the Wildlife on Mount Ainos.
If you’re looking to see some amazing wildlife, Mount Ainos is the perfect place for you! With its dense forests and highlands, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to view all sorts of creatures.
Some of the animals that call Mount Ainos home include foxes, blackbirds, owls, ferrets and wild horses, if you’re into bird-watching, this is definitely the place for you – there’s a huge variety of species found here.
3. See the Wild Horses
The Wild horses can be seen near the Monastery Zoodochus Pigi. They’re free to roam the mountains and rarely come down from the mountains, A jeep is the easiest way to get to the monastery. If you don’t have a jeep you should go around the mountain to Arginia and walk the last km. You will see these beautiful wild horses by the watering hole at the Monastery.
4. Take in the Views in Ainos National Park
The views in Ainos National Park are simply captivating. The national park is located 30 kilometres from Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia. It is home to an exotic range of flora and fauna, like blackbirds, owls, coal tits, etc.

If you want a bit more freedom, hire a car and go it alone. You will love the freedom of being able to stop when you want, do what you want when you want and just enjoy your time on Mount Ainos.
Is there anything else I should know about Mount Ainos before I go?
Yes, definitely! There are a few things to keep in mind before embarking on your hike.
Firstly, the mountain is quite high so the weather can change rapidly. Make sure to pack a coat or sweater during colder months!
Secondly, trainers/sneakers and comfortable clothes are recommended.
You’ll also want sunglasses and a hat to protect you from the sun.
Lastly, please note that while there may be alternative routes available, the highest point of Mount Ainos can’t be accessed in the afternoon. This means you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your hike without having to rush back down.
One final thing: To maximize the experience, we recommend wearing “casual clothing.” This will allow you to move more easily and take photos of your hike with your phone or camera. And don’t forget sunscreen–you’ll need it, especially if hiking in summer!
Finally, if there is not so great weather (windy or cold), bring a windbreaker as well to keep warm.
