If you are looking for a family villa in Kefalonia with a private pool, choosing the right part of the island can be just as important as choosing the villa itself.
Skala, Lassi, Fiskardo and Agia Efimia are among the names many visitors discover first. Each offers a very different kind of Kefalonia holiday.
But they are not your only choices.
For families, groups of friends and multi-generational holidays, South Kefalonia can offer something rather different: privacy, space, beautiful beaches, countryside, easy access to Argostoli and the airport, and the freedom to explore the island before returning to your own private villa.
At Amari Villa in Spartia, our five-bedroom private family villa sleeps up to nine guests and has its own gated swimming pool, spacious terraces, gardens and views across the Ionian Sea towards Zakynthos, with Mount Aenos behind.
But before deciding where to stay, we think there is a more useful question to ask:
What do you actually want from your Kefalonia holiday?
Do you want restaurants and bars within a few minutes’ walk?
Would you prefer a harbour where you can wander out for dinner every night?
Is a long organised beach important?
Or are you imagining mornings by your own private pool, enough space for everybody to spread out, a beach you can walk to and somewhere peaceful to come home to after exploring the island?
There isn’t one “best” place to stay in Kefalonia.
There is simply the part of the island that works best for the holiday you want to have.
Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and its mountainous landscape means journeys can sometimes take longer than the map suggests. Discover Greece recommends planning days geographically rather than repeatedly crossing the island.
So let us look at some of the areas you are most likely to consider.
Staying in Skala: for a traditional resort-style family holiday
Skala is one of Kefalonia’s best-known holiday resorts, on the south-east of the island.
It has a long beach, plenty of places to eat and drink, shops and holiday facilities, making it an easy choice for visitors who like having amenities close at hand. Visit Greece also highlights Skala as particularly suitable for families and water sports.
Skala may suit you if you want a recognisable resort, an organised beach and a good choice of restaurants without having to drive every evening.
For some families, that is exactly the holiday they want.
Others begin their search looking at Skala and then realise that what they really want is not necessarily a resort at all.
They want the space of a private villa, their own pool, somewhere quiet and the ability to discover a different part of Kefalonia each day.
If that sounds familiar, it is worth looking at South Kefalonia before making your decision.
Staying in Lassi: convenient for beaches and Argostoli

Lassi is close to Argostoli and Kefalonia Airport and is known for beaches including Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos.
It works particularly well for people who want beaches and tourist amenities while remaining close to the island’s capital. Visit Greece describes Makris and Platis Gialos as offering shallow water and good facilities.
Lassi may suit you if convenience and easy access to restaurants, organised beaches and Argostoli are high on your list.
But if the reason you are considering Lassi is because you want to stay reasonably close to Argostoli and the airport, there is another option.
Spartia lies in the peaceful Livathos area of South Kefalonia. From here you can enjoy countryside and sea views without giving up relatively easy access to the airport or Argostoli.
It can be a lovely compromise for families who want convenience without feeling as though they are staying in a resort.
Staying in Fiskardo: for harbour life and North Kefalonia
There is no denying Fiskardo’s appeal, one of Kefalonia’s scenic villages.
Pastel-coloured buildings, boats gathering in the harbour, waterfront restaurants and the green landscape of northern Kefalonia give it a very distinctive atmosphere.
It was also one of the parts of Kefalonia to retain much of its older architecture following the 1953 earthquake, which contributes to the character people travel there to experience.
Fiskardo may suit you if the harbour itself is a central part of the holiday you imagine and you particularly want to spend your time exploring North Kefalonia.
We wouldn’t try to persuade someone who dreams of walking into Fiskardo harbour every evening that they should stay somewhere else.
But sometimes people begin with Fiskardo because they are really searching for something more general:
Beautiful scenery.
Peace.
Sea views.
Lovely beaches.
A special villa.
If those are actually your priorities, it is worth comparing what your budget and requirements can provide elsewhere on the island too.
Staying in Agia Efimia: for an east-coast harbour base
Agia Efimia has a different feel again.
It is an attractive harbour village on Kefalonia’s east coast, within reach of places including Sami, Myrtos and the caves at Melissani and Drogarati.
Discover Greece describes Agia Efimia as an authentic picturesque village with a marina and access to nearby beaches and attractions.
Agia Efimia may suit you if you particularly enjoy harbour life, boat trips and want an east-coast base for exploring this side of Kefalonia.
For visitors who intend to spend a lot of their holiday around Sami, Myrtos and northern Kefalonia, its location can make excellent sense.
But again, think about what you actually want to come home to at the end of your day.
A harbour apartment and a private countryside villa offer two very different holidays.
What about South Kefalonia?

South Kefalonia sometimes gets overlooked when first-time visitors search for accommodation because names such as Skala and Fiskardo appear so frequently.
We think that is a shame.
This is the Kefalonia we fell in love with.
Around Spartia and the wider Livathos area you find olive groves, small villages, beaches and coves, local tavernas and views towards Mount Aenos and across the Ionian Sea.
There are well-known beaches within easy driving distance, including Avithos, Pessada, St Thomas and Lourdas, alongside smaller beaches that can feel wonderfully peaceful.
And because you are in the south of the island, Argostoli and Kefalonia Airport remain accessible without having to give up the feeling that you have escaped somewhere.
Why families choose a private villa in South Kefalonia

When several generations or two families travel together, accommodation starts to matter differently.
It is no longer simply somewhere to sleep.
Grandparents may want somewhere quiet to sit with a book.
Children want the pool.
Someone wants an early coffee before everyone else wakes.
Another person wants a little privacy after spending the day together.
Then, eventually, everyone appears around the same table for dinner.
That is one of the reasons we believe a large private family villa in Kefalonia can work so well.
You can be together without having to be together every minute.
Amari Villa: a five-bedroom private family villa in Kefalonia

Amari Villa sits just outside the idyllic village of Spartia in South Kefalonia.
It is a private, owner-managed holiday villa designed particularly for families, multi-generational groups and friends looking for space, privacy and their own swimming pool.
The villa has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and sleeps up to nine guests, making it particularly suited to larger families, two families travelling together, groups of friends and multi-generational holidays.
One bedroom and a bathroom with a walk-in shower are on the ground floor, with four further bedrooms upstairs.
Outside, the villa has its own private gated 9m x 6m swimming pool, terraces, gardens, shaded outdoor dining and barbecue areas.
From the villa you look across the countryside towards the Ionian Sea, while Mount Aenos rises behind.
And despite the sense of privacy, Spartia Beach is approximately 800 metres away. Thermanti Beach is also nearby, while several more of South Kefalonia’s beaches can be reached easily by car.
Kefalonia Airport is approximately 20 minutes away by car and Argostoli is within easy reach.
For us, that combination is what makes the location work:
privacy without isolation.
A villa with a private pool changes the rhythm of a family holiday

A private pool isn’t simply another amenity.
Especially when you are travelling with children or several generations, it changes how the day works.
Nobody has to be ready at exactly the same time.
You don’t have to pack everything for the beach simply because somebody wants a swim.
One part of the family can head out while another stays at the villa.
And when you return from exploring Kefalonia, the pool is still there waiting for you.
At Amari, the pool area is gated, something families travelling with younger children often particularly appreciate.
Some of our guests’ happiest days are the ones when the planned outing simply doesn’t happen.
Breakfast becomes longer.
Somebody gets into the pool.
Lunch appears under the pergola.
A book comes out.
And suddenly it is five o’clock.
Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when nothing was planned.
Is Spartia a good place to stay with children?

Spartia can be an excellent base for families who prefer a quieter setting rather than a busy resort.
Spartia/Klimatsias Beach is sandy and sheltered, and there are tavernas near the beach. Amari Villa is around 800 metres away.
It is worth knowing that the walk back towards the villa includes an uphill section, so many families choose to drive, particularly with small children or in the heat of the day.
Having a car also gives you the freedom to explore the many beaches and villages around Kefalonia.
Is South Kefalonia a good base for exploring the island?
We think so, particularly if you do not intend to cross the whole island every day.
Argostoli, St George’s Castle, local wineries and many southern beaches are easily incorporated into days from here.
You can then dedicate individual days to exploring further afield: perhaps Fiskardo and Assos one day, Sami and the caves another.
This is also consistent with Discover Greece’s advice to group Kefalonia sightseeing geographically because the island’s mountainous roads can make journeys longer than they appear on a map.
And after a day exploring?
You come home to your own pool.
Which part of Kefalonia should you choose?
Choose Skala if a lively holiday resort, organised beach and plenty of amenities close by are important to you.
Choose Lassi if you want a popular beach area with quick access to Argostoli.
Choose Fiskardo if its beautiful northern harbour is an important part of the holiday itself.
Choose Agia Efimia if you want an east-coast harbour base for exploring Sami, Myrtos and northern Kefalonia.
And consider Spartia and South Kefalonia if what you really want is a peaceful private villa, your own pool, plenty of space, beautiful surroundings, beaches nearby and the freedom to explore.
The question isn’t really:
“Which is the best resort in Kefalonia?”
It is:
“What do we want our family holiday to feel like?”
Frequently asked questions about family villas in Kefalonia
Where is the best place to stay in Kefalonia for families?
There is no single area that suits every family. Skala and Lassi work well for families wanting resort amenities and organised beaches. Families prioritising privacy, space, a private pool and a quieter base may prefer a villa in South Kefalonia around villages such as Spartia.
Where can I find a private family villa in Kefalonia with a pool?
Private villas are available throughout Kefalonia. Amari Villa in Spartia is a five-bedroom private villa for up to nine guests with its own gated 9m x 6m swimming pool, gardens and sea views.
Are there five-bedroom villas in Kefalonia for large families?
Yes. Amari Villa has five bedrooms and sleeps up to nine guests, making it suitable for larger families, two families sharing a holiday, multi-generational groups and groups of friends.
Can you stay in a Kefalonia villa near the beach?
Yes. Amari Villa is approximately 800 metres from Spartia/Klimatsias Beach, with Thermanti Beach also nearby and several other South Kefalonia beaches within a short drive.
Is a private villa better for a multi-generational holiday?
It depends on your family, but larger villas can provide something hotels sometimes cannot: shared living and dining areas combined with enough individual space for different generations to follow their own routines. At Amari Villa, a ground-floor bedroom and adjoining bathroom with a walk-in shower can also be helpful for some guests who prefer not to use the stairs.
Do we need a car if we stay in Spartia?
We recommend hiring a car. Although the beach and local tavernas can be reached on foot, a car makes it much easier to explore Kefalonia’s villages, beaches, attractions and restaurants at your own pace.
Is Amari Villa suitable for two families travelling together?
Yes. Five bedrooms and generous indoor and outdoor living spaces mean two families can holiday together while still having room to spread out. The private pool, outdoor dining areas and flexible sleeping arrangements are particularly useful for larger groups.
Looking beyond Skala, Lassi and Fiskardo?
